Why Patience is Essential for Success
Focusing on Long-Term Sustainability
How do we become more patient? I think one way is to focus on long-term sustainability. Ask yourself: what’s one habit that I can adopt today that’s going to move me closer to my goals, that’s actually attainable? Don’t try and be Arnold Schwarzenegger on January 1st. Instead, try and be a consistent person that goes to the gym four days a week by December 31st.
Let’s say you have a year to develop that habit. How you do that is by adopting one small habit at a time. That first habit may be just showing up to the gym and not even doing anything! If you have to do that for a month before you can actually go in and then hop on the treadmill for five minutes, that’s still a step in the right direction.
When you have a patient mindset, it allows you to plan things more realistically. You begin to prioritize longevity over short-term success, and that is crucial because there’s no such thing as short-term success! Patience is not an option if you want to succeed; it’s a necessity. You cannot succeed without it.
